Pat Patterson a.k.a. “The Racing Guy”
Pat Patterson, better known as The Racing Guy has been apart of modern day motor sports for more than 35 years and it has taken him from everywhere from the drivers seat to the anchor desk. Begining with the early days of being the public address announcer at a small track in Colorado, to hosting and producing the ground breaking television shows like “RaceDay on TNN” and “On Pit Road” a nationally syndicated weekly motorsports program, Patterson has been there, describing the action and talking to the history makers in motor sports. Along with televsion Pat has always had a passion for motor sports on radio as well. From NASCAR to the NHRA, Sports Cars and Sprints, Pat’s been apart of the American motor sports broadcast scene.
Radio was where it all started for Pat working as a Disc Jockey for WKZQ FM in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina when the opportunity to join the Performance Racing Network (PRN) as a Pit Reporter in the early 1980’s set him on a path of motor sports broadcasting that continues still today. Pat was apart of the beginnings of the Indy Car Radio Network and is still part of the team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) Radio Network. Pat produced and syndicated his own radio shows during the 80’s and early 90’s and also sold all of his shows advertising as well.
Pat spent many years as a motor sports promoter. In the 90’s Pat and his company produced live programming and created the first ever “Sprint Car World Series”. This was a ten race event that was aired on The Nashville Network (TNN) for two seasons. It was the first time in history that sprint car racing had ever had a live televised racing events. These events sparked the “Winter Heat Series” in the desert of AZ and gave new and up and coming racing talents their first national exposure. Pat was voted into the Sprint Car Hall of Fame twice as Media Member of the Year for his contribution with the series. Later, Pat was apart of the launch of Irwindale Speedway located in Irwindale CA. These experences gave Pat a unique insight into the business of promoting and staging racing events.
Pat found that talking about racing was great, but getting behind the wheel was even better. In the middle 90’s Pat started with Ledgend Cars, moved to NASCAR Late Models, raced the NASCAR Dash Series and teamed with his partner Steve Portenga to win the NASCAR Southwest Tour Championship in 1998. Pat also did a considerable amount of road racing in Sports Club Car of America (SCCA) and International Motor Sports of America (IMSA). In fact from the 24Hours in Daytona to the 12 hour race in Sebring, from the Snowball Derby in Pensacola Florida to the Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), Pat got a taste of what few broadcasters ever dreamed of and those experiences then provide Pat with a unique prospective in his life as a broadcaster today.
“These days you can find The Racing Guy at the track and on the air all the time”. Pat travels to more than 80% of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in his motor home and broadcast from the tracks weekly on SIRIUS XM. “The Front Stretch” can be heard on SIRIUS XM NASCAR Channel 90 7am to 11am (EST) on both Saturday’s and Sundays, fifty two weeks each year. Also, during the season Pat produces more than one hundred weekly updates on racing for ESPN Radio. The shows keep everyone up to speed on NASCAR from the Sprint Cup Series, Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Truck Series too. Opinion, results and interviews are apart of “The Front Stretch on SIRIUS XM NASCAR Channel 90” each and every week.
This show gives the NASCAR audience a chance to sound off each week and talk directly to Pat about the sport they love! Pat is still apart of the Performance Racing Network which broadcast more than twenty live NASCAR races each year from all the SMI tracks around the country and if you need to find Pat “On Line” just head over to www.theracingguy.com.
